PRESS RELEASE - Black History Month Curriculum

PRESS RELEASE

The Dufferin County Canadian Black Association (DCCBA) is proud to advocate and act on behalf of our Black community.

During Black History Month, a concerned parent in our community brought to our attention that their child was traumatized after a book used in class contained repeated use of the N word! Upon receiving the complaint, the DCCBA leadership along with Deputy Mayor Steve Anderson took immediate action contacting representatives at the Upper Grand District School Board asking that the subject material be immediately withdrawn, and an apology issued to the family.

DCCBA is proud to report to the community that our involvement led to the book being removed from the curriculum preventing further harm to students and families. In addition, the Upper Grand District School Board committed to doing a full audit of all reading material for Black History Month to ensure that all material was appropriate and supports inclusive learning for all students.

The Dufferin County Canadian Black Association is proud of the partnership with Upper Grand District School Board and will continue to work together on issues impacting our community.

Sincerely,

Alethia O’Hara Stephenson, President, Dufferin County Canadian Black Association

Steve Anderson, Deputy Mayor Town of Shelburne, Regional Councillor Dufferin County.
